SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION – ISD #361 INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MINNESOTA

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 – 5:00 p.m.

Falls High School Library

1.  CALL MEETING TO ORDER:  Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Stuart Nordquist at 5:00 p.m.  

2.  ROLL CALL:  Members present were Michelle Hebner, Mark Lassila, Will Kostiuk, Stuart Nordquist, Dena Wenberg and Darrell Wagner.  Also present was Superintendent Jeff Peura.

3.  PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

4.  APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Moved by W. Kostiuk,  seconded by D. Wagner to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote.

5.  PERSONNEL

5.1.  Accept the resignation of Jeff Peura, Superintendent, effective June 30, 2012.

Moved by M. Hebner, seconded by W. Kostiuk to accept item 5.1.  

Motion carried by a unanimous vote.

5.2.  ADOPT  RESOLUTIONS FOR NON-RENEWAL OF PROBATIONARY TEACHERS FOR 2012-13.

Moved by W. Kostiuk, seconded by D. Wagner to place item 5.2. Adopt Resolution for Non-Renewal of Probationary Teachers for 2012-13 which was tabled at the April 16th meeting back on the table for consideration.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote.  

Moved by M. Hebner, seconded by D. Wagner to remove item 5.2.5 Beth Shermoen from the resolution and combine all others into one resolution.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote.

Member M. Hebner introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:

RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE TERMINATION

AND NONRENEWAL OF THE TEACHING CONTRACTS OF

STEPHANIE DAVIS, KIM KUFFENKAM, TERRI MASON, JONELLE

MELLSTROM, AND DARRELL SCHMIDT,  PROBATIONARY TEACHERS

    WHEREAS Stephanie Davis, Kim Kuffenkam, Terri Mason, Jonelle Mellstrom and Darrell Schmidt are probationary teachers in Independent School District No. 361, and

    BE IT RESOLVED, by the School Board of Independent School District No. 361, that pursuant to Minnesota Statues 122A.40, Subdivision 5 and the collective bargaining agreement between ISD 361 and EDMN Local 331,  that the teaching contracts of Stephanie Davis, Kim Kuffenkam, Terry Mason, Jonelle Mellstrom, and Darrell Schmidt, probationary teachers in Independent School District No. 361, are hereby terminated at the close of the current 2011-12 school year.

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that written notice be sent to said teachers regarding termination and nonrenewal of his/her contract as provided by law, and that said notice shall be in substantially the following form:

Dear Ms. Davis//:

You are hereby notified that at a regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District No. 361 held on April 16, 2012, a resolution was adopted by a majority roll call vote to terminate your contract effective at the end of the current school year and not renew your contract for the 2012-13 school year.  Said action of the board is taken pursuant to M.S. 122A.40, Subd. 5.

You may officially request that the school board give its reasons for the non-renewal of your teaching contract.

SCHOOL BOARD OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 361

The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by D. Wagner and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof:  M. Hebner, M. Lassila, W. Kostiuk, S. Nordquist, D. Wenberg and D. Wagner                          and the following voted against the same: none

whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.

6.  DISCUSSION

6.1.  Discussion of administrative structure for 2012-13.

After discussion it was determined that the positions of Elementary Principal and Superintendent would continue in their current format and direction was given to post the postions with an application deadline of May 25th.

7.  ADJOURNMENT

Moved by D. Wagner, seconded by D. Wenberg to adjourn the meeting at 5:12 p.m.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote.
