In loving memory of Gerald Sumner.
As I sit and wait for the phone to be answered, I wonder what I will find out. Finally I hear a sweet voice say “Hello. How may I direct your call?” I let out a sigh and tell her that I was calling to check on someone. “Oh, Ok. Please hold as I transfer you to the Counselor.” Again, I wait; it seems like it is taking a long time, but finally I hear a smooth, caring male voice say “Hello?”
“Umm, hi,” I say. “I’m calling to check on someone” I start.
“Yes, I see here that he arrived on time. Is there anything I can tell you?” the voice asks. How do I ask the things I want to know? The things I need to know? “Well, I guess I just want to know he’s ok.”
It’s almost as if I can hear the Counselor smile. “Yes, I can tell you that he is doing very well. There was a team of some very special people to meet him when he first arrived. It was a wonderful moment for me to watch as he was embraced by his mother and father. There were a lot of tears, some catching up, a lot of hugs; a very tender moment for me to witness. He has made new friends, and has been spending time with some old friends. He and his father-in-law sit together quite often and talk about old music. I see him sitting with his mother-in-law out in the gardens talking about his wife. He wants me to let you know that he watches over all of you, that he misses you, and that no matter what, he will always love you. I need you to know that he suffers no more, the pain is gone. He is at peace and free. He is Home, and will see you all again.”
With a tear sliding down my face, I awaken. “Thank you Father,” I whisper.
It was a year ago I left your side. I told you I’d be right back;
How was I to know we’d both get called home — me to tears of sorrow,
You to the welcoming arms of Heaven.
Love and miss you,
your family
