Mike Riley

On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Michael Riley, loving father, brother, uncle, and son, passed away at the age of 58.

Michael was born Sept. 13, 1960, in International Falls, Minn., to Tom and Kathleen (Thompson) Riley.

He graduated from Falls High School in 1979, played for the Broncos, played one year of junior hockey in Green Bay, and continued his hockey endeavors at Augsburg College where the team captured the National Championship in 1981 and 1982.

Mike received a bachelor of arts in communications at Augsburg in 1984.

His marriage to Deb Scholler in 1998 was blessed with two daughters, Madison Nicole and Megan Jean. He loved his girls with all his heart.

Michael led a career in banking and finance. During his Brainerd, Minn., residence, he served as the president and chief executive officer of Bremer Bank, and chief operations officer of Mills Auto.

He was a member of the St. Frances Catholic Church and served on various community boards and committees.

Mike had an independent nature and was known to “dress for the occasion.” He was a great cook and especially enjoyed preparing breakfast for his daughters and their friends.

He was proud to be a Falls Bronco. One of his most cherished memories was that he was one of three Falls High School Class of ‘79 members (Robin Anderson and Bill Mason) that were Western Collegiate Hockey Association college hockey referees at the same time.

Other interests include fishing, hunting, golf and traveling.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen; and his grandparents, Everett (Buck) and Jeanne Riley and Clifford (Kife) and Inez Thompson; and uncle, Richard Thompson.

He is survived by his daughters, Madison and Megan Riley; father, Tom Riley; brothers, Scott (Tammy) Riley and John (Katie) Riley; nieces and nephews, Derek, Nicholas, Paige and Caitlyn Riley; uncles and aunts, Clifford Jr. (Tommy) Thompson, Robert (Jean) Thompson, Dee Dee Thompson and Nancy (Terry) Harala; cousins, Brooke Joslyn, Scott Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Allison Harala and Lacey Richmond; and family members by former marriage, Deb Scholler, Bill and Maxine Scholler, Patti (Jerry) Bolstad, Barb (Terry) Thompson, Greg, Todd and Tim (Dave) Scholler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, at St. Francis Church, 404 N. Ninth St., Brainerd, with visitation beginning one hour prior.
