Virgil was born to Clayton and Marcella (Miller) Hanson on April 12, 1944. He grew up in Littlefork, Minn., before graduating from Littlefork High School in 1962.
He married Marlys Beckstrand on Dec. 23, 1963, and was blessed with three daughters.
Virgil was a foreman at Boise Cascade in International Falls, Minn., while simultaneously working as a volunteer fireman and emergency medical technician for several years.
After moving to Bemidji, Minn., in 1987, he went on to work for the Housing and Redevelopment Authority acting as a manager of an apartment complex and offsite rentals before retiring in 1999.
Throughout his life Virgil lived in Littlefork, International Falls and Bemidji. He also spent a brief time living in Eugene, Ore.
Virgil was an amazingly talented self-taught musician and cook, with a creative eye and a generous giving nature. These passions came second only to his love for family and time spent together.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rocky Hanson; and his brothers-in-law, Chuck Rush, Ron Olson and Dave Hammel.
Virgil is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlys Hanson of Bemidji; daughters, Cindy Hanson of Bemidji, Jodi (Patrick) Spencer of Bemidji, and Kami (Chad) Kelm of Bemidji; grandchildren, Austin Spencer of Bemidji, Kole Spencer of Bemidji, Kiana Spencer of Duluth, Minn., Kali Kelm of Grand Forks, N.D., and Carson Kelm of Bemidji; siblings, Jan Rush of Eugene, Ardy (Tim) Bussiere of Pickeral, Wis., Paula Olson of Mora, Minn., Sally (Jared) Pearson of International Falls, and Jerry (Shirley) Hanson of Mora, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews; special family friends, Fred and Peggy Kelm; and his beloved dog, “Buddy.”
A private Celebration of Life will be conducted at a later date.
