The art and history of henna body art
  • Updated

Learning about henna body art and its history is the focus of an upcoming workshop at the International Falls Public Library.

The art and history of henna body art with Kristy Johnson is a free program courtesy of the Arrowhead Library System that will include the history and culture of henna through the ages as well as how to mix and apply pure, natural henna. The program is set for 1 p.m. Monday at the library.

Johnson, according to a release, has a passion for henna and has been studying and sharing her art at festivals and events across the Duluth — Superior area since 1995. As a self taught artist she has become well versed in the history and the art form of henna that has been around since nearly the beginning of time, the release said.

During Monday’s workshop, Johnson is expected to share the history, cultural traditions and science of henna, in a fun relaxed atmosphere packed with hands-on education and experience, the release continued. Participants can expect to learn how to prepare the perfect batch of pure natural henna paste, application techniques, and the importance of choosing natural henna, as well as an opportunity to create and practice traditional designs on paper, yourself and other brave students in the workshop.

This program was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Track the man in the sleigh
  • Updated

With just three weeks until Christmas, the North American Aerospace Defense Command is ready to track Santa’s yuletide journey.

According to a release, the NORAD Tracks Santa website, www.noradsanta.org, launched this week and features a mobile version, a holiday countdown, new games, daily activities, and more. The website is available in eight languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Chinese.

Official NORAD Tracks Santa apps are also available in the Windows, Apple and Google Play stores, allowing parents and children to count down the days until Santa’s launch on their smart phones and tablets. Tracking opportunities are also offered on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google+. Santa followers just need to type “@noradsanta” into each search engine to get started.

Also new to the website this year, the release continued, is Santa’s elves in the North Pole Village. NORAD Tracks Santa is introducing the newest elf and asking the public to help choose the perfect name for him. Details can be found via NORAD Tracks Santa social media or in the “Name the Elf” video in Santa’s North Pole Movie Theater at www.noradsanta.org.

Starting Dec. 24, website visitors can watch Santa make preparations for his flight. NORAD’s Santa Cams will stream videos on the website as Santa makes his way over various locations. Then, at 5 a.m. trackers worldwide can speak with a live phone operator to inquire as to Santa’s whereabouts by dialing the toll-free number 877-446-6723 or by sending an email to noradtrackssanta@outlook.com. Any time on Dec. 24, Windows phone users can ask Cortana for Santa’s location, and OnStar subscribers can press the OnStar button in their vehicles to find Santa.

Falls High School cheerleaders Regan Hanson left, and Maddy Foss, cheered in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City last month through The Spirit of America Productions. Aside from cheering in the annual event, the FHS seniors took full advantage of The Big Apple by sight seeing, skating in Rockefeller Center and attending a Broaday show at Radio City Music Hall.
