Police Report
  • Updated

Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office

Burglary: Jewelry valued at about $5,000 and $500 cash was reported taken Tuesday from a safe at the Brian Horne residence, Town Road 397, Littlefork. According to the report, the following items were taken: Silver diamond earrings, silver diamond heart-shaped necklace, a wedding ring, pearl earrings and a pearl necklace.

Warrant for escapee: A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Paula J. Anderson, 45, who ran on foot Tuesday from St. Cloud recovery center after leaving the building while doing chores, according to the report. She is wanted in Koochiching County on three separate drug charges.

International Falls Police Department

Scam: Cpt. Tom Lynch said the department has received four or five calls about a telephone scam in which the caller claims to be from the FBI and asks for money to pay unpaid taxes or a warrant for an arrest will be issued. The caller provides a telephone number to call to pay the money. Lynch urged people not to provide any information. “If you are confident there is no warrant for you in the continental United States, you can be pretty sure it’s a scam,” he said. The department has attempted to trace the calls, and has contacted the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, but because the calls are usually made from another country, they cannot be traced. Questions about whether a call is a scam can be directed to the police department, he said.

Why bridge decks freeze faster
  • Updated

Q: Why do bridge decks freeze up faster than the rest of the roadway?

A: Bridges are made of steel and concrete which conduct heat well and the heat within the structure is released rapidly from all sides when temperatures drop. When the bridge loses heat while being hit with freezing wind and air from all sides, it quickly responds matching the dropping temperatures; leaving icy bridge decks. I might add that bridges, by purpose, are often built above cold spots, like rivers, adding to this quick cool system.

A road doesn’t have as many avenues for the heat to escape and thus doesn’t cool as fast being insulated from the earth below. Additionally, asphalt roads do not conduct heat well and the response to frigid temperature is slower.

Do not use cruise control on snow/icy/wet roads and make sure to turns those headlights on when it is snowing/sleeting/raining/ or foggy.

If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws or issues in Minnesota send your questions to Sgt. Neil Dickenson, Minnesota State Patrol, 1131 Mesaba Ave., Duluth, MN 55811. Or at neil.dickenson@state.mn.us.
