David Zaren, 68, of International Falls, Minn., died Monday evening, Nov. 24, 2014, at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center, Eveleth, Minn., with his family by his side.
David was the son of the William “Bill” and Marjorie (Morin) Zaren, born Jan. 28, 1946, in International Falls, where he remained a lifelong resident.
David married the former Karen Torfin on July 23, 1966, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in International Falls.
In his early days, David worked on the Fort Thompson Dam in South Dakota. He later worked in the wood room and security at the pulp landing for Boise Cascade in International Falls. He retired after 45 years of service.
David enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, mechanics, stock car racing and being a NASCAR fan.
He liked boxing and was a Golden Glove boxer.
David was a longtime member of St. Thomas Church.
He and his wife were foster parents for 21 years and had over 400 foster children.
David was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, JoAnn Stella Zaren; and sister, Margaret Morelli.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen (Torfin) Zaren; daughter, Missy Zaren and friend Steve Museta; sons, Davy Zaren and fiancé Lyndsay Jones and Donald Zaren and fiancé Beth Little, all of International Falls; grandchildren, Natalie Zaren and fiancé Josh Neal, Shane Zaren, Destiny Zaren and Maci Zaren; great-grandchildren, Kingston Neal and Kilaya Neal; step grandchildren, Ashley Ahlbeck, Layla Zahn and Danika Zahn; brothers, Fran (Marie) Zaren of International Falls and Tim (Kathy) Zaren of Calumet, Minn.; sisters, Kathie (Alan Milender) of Superior, Mont., Judy Zaren of Superior, Mont., Susan Zaren of International Falls, Betsy Zaren of International Falls and Linda (Jim) Peterson of Deer River, Minn.; brother-in-law, Dino (Elaine) Morelli; many special nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles; and special friends, Chuck and Kathy Reid, Doug Wickstrom, Jay Becker, Alan Clark and Greg Jensen.
Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at St. Thomas Catholic Church.
Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Green-Larsen Mortuary.
