Library will be busy in March
  • Updated

Monday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. we’re starting the month with a really cool program for history buffs and more.

This year is the final year of the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. Arn Kind will share information about the events that threatened to break up this great nation of ours. The American Civil War was America’s bloodiest conflict. 620,000 American’s would lose their lives over the four years of the struggle.

Through drama, role playing and living history experiences, Kind’s presentation will give participants an understanding of this turbulent time and bring history alive.

Kind dresses in the uniform of a Union soldier and goes through the uniform, equipment, and weapons used by soldiers in the American Civil War. He is a member of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment; a reenactment group based out of Fort Snelling.

This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Storytime and stay to play continues on Thursday mornings beginning at 10:30 a.m. March will bring stories about cows, pigs, silliness and spring. We spend about 30 minutes hearing stories, singing songs, doing rhymes and fingerplays then spend about 30 minutes playing together, at least nominally, with toys that encourage early science skill building like counting, physics, building and more.

The Friends of the Library book sale will be Wednesday, March 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. All sales are by donation with proceeds benefiting the Friends support of library programmings.

Our third “Open Mic Night” will be Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. Come share a song, poem, skit or other verbal talent (any beat boxers in town?) you have and listen to others share their work. Everyone ages 10 and up is welcome to come share and listen. Please contact Diane if you have additional questions.

Thursday, March 19, at 1 p.m., the library is pleased to present Northern Gael in concert Northern Gael weaves together the vibrant traditions of Ireland and Scotland. Northern Gael presents a lively program of an authentic Celtic repertoire. Join us for a powerful blast of traditional music and dance.

This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, is funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

March means the days are getting longer and the hope of spring is in the air. March is also FoodShare month and that means we will be taking Food for Fines the week of March 23-28. You can bring in canned food to donate to Falls Hunger Coalition and we will waive $1 of your fine for each can you bring.

Please do not bring dented or past-sell-date food. The food shelf can’t use the food and we can’t afford to throw it away. Pay off your fine with food and provide support for those in need.

The March Pictures and Pens theme is ‘Reflection’ with entries due by March 31.

Pet of the Week

Meet “Annie,” folks. She is a whole lot of happiness in your home. She is quiet, gentle, great around kids and is very good with other dogs and cats once she has time to get used to them. She is the perfect therapy cat for someone who needs a hole in their heart filled. She is waiting for you to fill that hole in her heart, also. About 1 to 1 ½ years old, Annie is spayed, up-to-date on shots, and ready to go.
