Fill your holidays with books
  • Updated

Books, books, and more books. I hope everyone is giving books and will be getting books this holiday season. That is my Christmas wish for everyone.

Monday, Dec. 22, at 1 p.m., we are pleased to host Henna: Art and History presented by Kristy Johnson of Duluth. Learn about the dyes, the process and add a simple design to yourself.

There are great titles for readers of all ages to enjoy and share on best books of 2014 lists beginning to be released. Let us know some of your favorite titles from the last year that you’ve read. You can tell us when you stop by and check out new books to read or like the “International Falls Library” page on Facebook and tell us what you read that you’ve really enjoyed.

Here are a few of my favorite books from this past year for kids. But don’t ask me to pick a favorite book, my favorites vary depending on to whom I’m talking and what I’ve read that they might like. I guess I’m a librarian through and through. I want to share what will make you love reading as much as I do.

“Ninja!” By Arree Chung is a wonderful title to share with the kid who loves to imagine destruction is waiting just around the corner and they are the only one capable of defeating the challenge or obstacle.

A wonderful story about two friends and their dog is “Sam and Dave Dig a Hole” by Mac Barnett. This is a delightful tale of two boys out to discover treasure, but it always seems just out of reach or in a different direction.

Did you ever play the game telephone as a kid? The picture book “Telephone,” also by Mac Barnett, plays with that game as mama bird tells another bird to tell her son to come home for dinner, and of course hilarity ensues.

“Mr. Pants: It’s Go Time!”, with words by Scott McCormick and pictures by R.H. Lazzell, is a graphic novel for young readers about a cat on the last day of summer who has big plans about what to do, regardless of what his sisters have planned.

While a poetry book for young children, “Winter Bees & other Poems of the Cold,” by Minnesota author Joyce Sidman and illustrator Rick Allen, would be wonderful for anyone on your gift list. This stunning book of poems, prints and facts is riveting and mesmerizing and gorgeous.

The library will close at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and remain closed until Friday, Dec. 26, at 10 a.m. Enjoy the holiday with family and friends. New Years’ Eve the library will close at 5 p.m., be closed Thursday, Jan. 1, and re-open on Friday, Jan. 2, at 10 a.m.

Merry Christmas. This will be my last column of the year. I am going to take some time to enjoy family and friends the next couple of weeks. May your holidays be bright and filled with lots of books.

Pet of the Week

Hi, my biography hasn’t been completed yet because I am a work in progress. Each chapter of my life has been so different, going from having a family to no home at all and then moving in to the shelter. I am the kind of cat who is very flexible, not only physically, but with changes in my life. The next chapter in my life will be one of happiness and laughter, one that will include my forever home. I don’t know who the lucky person will be who will be by my side, but I can’t wait to meet him or her. Until that time comes, I will be patiently waiting for my next chapter to be written. — Sincerely, Erica
