Adeline Hattie Beck, 92

Adeline Hattie Beck, 92, of International Falls, Minn., died early Monday, March 16, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society-International Falls.

She was born June 25, 1922, to John and Hattie Gastecki in Little Falls, Minn.

Adeline was united in marriage to John Beck.

She had been employed as a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn.

Picking blueberries and gardening were some of her passions.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Bernadette Christianson; grandson, Joe Beck; and nephew, Jimmy Christianson.

Adeline is survived by children, Joe, Mary and Alice (Tom); grandchildren, Clinton (Lauriel) and Matt; great-grandchildren, Celeste (Nick), Kevin (Kelly), Kayla (Daniel), Jodi (Derrick), Jenny, Josie (Terry), Alexis and Riley; great-great-grandchildren, Allison, Abbigail, Neko, Nyssa, Kyara, Milo, Jeremiah, Mikhayla, Gabriel, Makayla, Leyla and JJ. She is also survived by a niece, Barb (Axel) and nephews, Billy and Bobby; and special person, Jeri Ann Graves.

Mass of the Resurrection was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Visitation was one hour prior.

Helen Clarice (Slowe) Williams Tonn, 92

Memorial services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2015, at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, St. Cloud, Minn., for Helen Clarice (Slowe) Williams Tonn, 92, of Sartell, Minn., formerly of International Falls, Minn., who passed away Wednesday, March 18, at St. Cloud Hospital.

The Rev. Dee Pederson will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, St. Cloud.

Born June 1, 1922, she was the daughter of William Benjamin Slowe and Esther Evelyn (Akelstad) Slowe, both of whom preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Clifford Slowe, Dorothy Gjesdahl, Benjamin Slowe, Evelyn Esther Slowe, Lorraine Lessard and Marion Stavseth.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Evelyn Marie (Williams) Pedrys; and husbands, Fred Williams and Milton Tonn.

Helen is survived by her children, Daniel (Jean) Williams of Nineveh, Ind., Sharon (Ken) Aho of Chisago City, Minn., Judy Olson of St. Cloud, Joe (Nancy) Williams of Sartell, Phil Williams of Ranier, Minn., and Brad Williams of Edina, Minn.

In addition, she is survived by her sisters, Cora Olmsted of International Falls and Betty (Richard) Olen of Menominee Falls, Wis.

Over the course of her lifetime, Helen was blessed with 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Her extended family included numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.


Glenda Marie Dougherty, 68

A Celebration of Life for Glenda Marie Dougherty, 68, of International Falls, who died Saturday, March 14, 2015, was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Green-Larsen Mortuary, International Falls.

Officiating was Pastoral Minister Pat Bjorum.

Honorary pallbearers were all her loving family and friends.

A luncheon followed at Elks Lodge 1599.

Interment will take place in the spring at Oakley Cemetery, Littlefork.

Arrangements were with Green-Larsen Mortuary Inc., International Falls.

40 YEARS AGO

Don Lewis, 824 Third St., is a winner of a bronze medal in the “Medals for Miles” cross country ski awards program co-sponsored by Eastman Kodak Company and the United States Ski Association.

Elvin Foss and Donald Stadum, both of the Falls, were among the group of 59 counselors and six recruiters from the Fargo, N.D., Navy Recruiting District who attended the Navy’s “Training for Opportunity” conference in San Diego.

Miss Lyn Swenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Swenson of Ranier, began a “three-year working holiday.” She has been teaching in Australia during the past year and the holiday includes working in Asia, England and the United States.

Wayne (Jerry) Ronning, 1107 11th St., has purchased Falls Surplus store from the A.R. Johnsons. He formerly managed the firm, as well as Bargain City.

Stan Reeve with 112 points led the Swamp Rats of Alexander Baker School to a 32-20 victory over the Holler Hoosiers in a sixth grade basketball game at Holler gymnasium.

The Cats were runners-up to the Monkeys in both season play and in a round-robin playoff that brought the ninth grade girls’ basketball competition to an end. Team members are Linda Rasmussen, Jill Seegert, Pat Raboin, Mary Phair, Diane Hanson, Joyce Nyberg, Audrey Henrickson, Susie Polus and Janice Larson.

A new materials handling technique for shop areas that will cut costs through damage avoidance has been developed by the materials research and production methods organization of Douglas Aircraft, Santa Monica, Califo. Designer of the technique is Don Maxwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Maxwell, International Falls. He is a graduate of Falls High School.

The name Nagurski will disappear from the list of Falls food markets this week with closing of the well-known Nagurski grocery and meat market at the corner of Eighth Street and Ninth Avenue.

A daughter was born today at Littlefork Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Polkinghorne, Littlefork; weight, 7 pounds, 4 1/2 ounces; name chosen Susan Irene.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller, 613 13th Ave., announce the engagement of their daughter, Barbara, to Dale Carpenter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Carpenter, Longville.

Mrs. Jack Scholta, Loman, has been caring for the infant son of her cousin, Mrs. Donald Frick of the Falls, while Mrs. Frick was confined to Falls Memorial Hospital.

70 YEARS AGO

Pfc. Conrad F. Carroll, 29, gave his life March 3 in action in Italy, according to official word received by his wife, Mrs. Norma Carroll. In addition to his widow, Pvt. Carroll is survived by two sons, Donald and Gerald; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carroll, 230 Third Ave., and three sisters and two brothers.

Mr. and Mrs. Myron Ness of this city announce the birth of a son today at Northern Minnesota Hospital.
