Dorothy Elizabeth Burrell

The family of Dorothy Elizabeth Burrell are saddened by her passing on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015.

Dorothy was born in International Falls, Minn., on Oct. 22, 1924, to Mary Ann (Callahan) and Crenvell (Chris) Campbell. She was the youngest of six children.

Dorothy married Roy Burrell in Fort Frances, Ontario, on June 16, 1945, and became a landed immigrant. Together they raised four children.

Dorothy was very active in organizations, holding offices in most — Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary (president), Royal Purple (Honor Royal Lady), Rebekah Redwing Lodge, CP&T, Knox United Church Ladies Auxiliary and TOPS.

Dorothy started her working career in the International Falls O&M Insulite mill, later moving and working in Oregon. After her marriage and when her children were older she went to work for Forsberg & Lindberg, Esquire Shop and later as a classroom supervisor at Fort Frances High School.

Dorothy is survived by her four children — Mary (Dale) Cooper, Patricia (Ron) Frenette, Amy Jean Wreggitt and James (Joanne) Burrell; eight grandchildren — Neil (Tanis) and Jon Cooper, Bradley (Martha) and Cameron (Lisette) Frenette, Danny (Kim) and Nick Burrell, Melissa (Mark) Angove and Jamie (Kristen) Wreggitt; 10 great-grandchildren — Jaden, Dakota and Keaton Cooper, Lane Mann, Erica and Grant Frenette, Amara Wreggitt, Prestyn and Elliss Angove and Connor Burrell; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2005; her parents, Mary Ann and Chris Campbell; her two sisters, Vivian O’Leary and Mary Ann Neveau; her three brothers, Jack, Robert and Jim Ferguson and all their spouses; mother- and father-in-law, Harry and Amy E. Burrell; step mother-in-law, Velda Burrell; sister- and brother-in-law, Edna and Allan Avis; and her son-in-law, Claude DeBenedet.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at the Hallett Hall at Rainycrest Long Term Care. The Rev. Ralph Fluit officiated.

Interment is at Riverview Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dorothy’s grandchildren.

Florence 'Sally' Lucille Merritt, 82

Florence “Sally” Lucille Merritt, 82, of Littlefork, Minn., died Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at Littlefork Medical Center.

Florence was born Nov. 24, 1932, to Kerbie and Belle Siltman (Noble) in Ponto Lake Township.

She graduated from Backus High School.

On April 7, 1950, Florence was united in marriage to Wesley Guy Merritt and moved to Littlefork in 1953.

Florence enjoyed quilting, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Littlefork Garden Club, and St. Columban Catholic Church where she taught for Release Time.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley; son, Michael; daughter, Cheryl; granddaughter, Rina; three brothers; a sister; and daughter-in-law, June Merritt.

Florence is survived by her sons, Kerbie (Gena) Merritt of Cloquet, Minn., and Clinton Merritt of Backus, Minn.; daughter, Gayle (Jeff) Schmitz of Hiawatha, Iowa; 13 grandchildren — Riley, Kristin, Jenny, Russ, Mark, Wes, Nathan, Isaac, Jasmine, Sang, Jon, Tony and Ben; 15 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Laura Sheldon of Fritz Creek, Ark.; special nephew, Elwyn “Jr” Siltman; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Siltman.

Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Columban Catholic Church, Littlefork,

Visitation will be from noon to 1, with Rosary at noon.

Interment will be at Oakley Cemetery, Littlefork.

Memorials may be sent to the Littlefork VFW or Littlefork Thriftstore.

A memorial service for Bradley James Friesen, 44, formerly of International Falls and currently of Blaine, who died Dec. 22, 2014, was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, International Falls.

Officiating was Fr. Ben Hadrich.

Organist was May Ann Kalar with vocalists Terry Wood and Stacie Steinberg.

Usher was Frank Watkinson and reader was Alyssa Hackenmueller.

Remembrances were given by Michelle Friesen, Alexis Friesen and Darlene Tomczak.

Harry David Nash Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nash Sr. of Loman Route, enlisted in the U.S. Army delayed entry program on Feb. 1.

St. Thomas School speech team members Mary Ruelle, Charlotte Hilfer and Robert Grinsell won awards in their respective categories at the Feb. 22 speech festival at Aurora-Hoyt Lakes.

Retiring this month from Boise Cascade Company were Carl Simonson, paper division crew, and Ferdinand Hanson, Insulite inspector loader.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bertram, Island View Route, announce the engagement of their daughter, Carolyn, to Gary Davison, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Keenan, Brown’s Corner.

Army Pvt. Roger H. Hutchings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hutchings, the Falls, qualified as expert in firing the .45 caliber sub-machine gun at Fort Hood, Texas.

The following pupils of Mrs. Ben Niemi will play in an informal recital Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Niemi home: Judy, Kathy and Vicki Armstrong, Helen and Karen Schwankl, Carla Anderson, Linda and Gary Degerman, Linda Muckala, Eric Ekman, Robin Saunders, Martha Enzmann and Kathy Kirk.

A birthday party was held in honor of Mrs. Clifford Oslund, Ericsburg, at her home recently. Mrs. Frank Holt brought the decorated birthday cake.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Millard Augustson, 230 Third St.; weight, 7 pounds, 7 3/4 ounces.

Stanley Pierce Jr. celebrated his seventh birthday at a party after school. Guests were Billy Dyrstad, Jimmy Polkinghorne, Robert Jornlin, Jimmy Jornlin, Michael Kerry, Tommy Doris, Ricky Hewitt and Wayne Etienne.

James Stenberg, MM 3/c, is spending a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Stenberg, Highway 53. Machinists Mate Stenberg is stationed with the U.S. Navy in Japan.

70 YEARS AGO

Kwe Ho left for Littlefork this morning to visit his 4-year-old daughter, Helen, who is a patient there.

Pfc. Glenn W. Napper, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Napper of Holler, gave his life Feb. 2 in action in Burma, after serving since August 1944 in India and Burma with a calvery division.

Miss Alice Thomspon, 601 Sixth St., is back at her position in the Falls Public Library after a six-month leave of absence. During her leave she was employed at the Kaiser shipyards at Portland, Ore.

J.J. Oster, 66, of Ranier, who owned and operated the Ranier Mercantile Company for approximately 30 years, died Friday night at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.
