John Charles Abley, 98

John Charles Abley, of International Falls, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, at the age of 98.

He was born July 21, 1916, in Fort Frances, Ontario.

He served on a Navy destroyer during World War II in the South Pacific.

He was the longest living paper maker.

John had a strong spirit. He loved to travel, fish, and garden.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leander Abley (1931) and Emma Scobie Abley (1969); his wife, Betty (2004); and his daughter, Debra (1989).

He is survived by his son, John Abley of California, daughter, Cheryl (Refugio) Rivera, granddaughter, Candy (Allen) Wehenkel, great-grandsons Brandon and Aaron, granddaughter, Elizabeth (Ross) Luken, great-granddaughter Anna, granddaughter, Christina Rivera (Emil) Thorsen, great-grandsons Julian, Eskil and new baby boy in Stockholm, Sweden, several hours after John passed.

He will be missed by all.

Thank you to all that helped the family.

Private services will be conducted in the summer.

The first-ever girls’ basketball team at Falls High School won the runner-up District 27 trophy at last week’s tournament in Aurora. Members of the team are; Lisa McLinn, Cheryl Cassibo, Cindy Kruse, Sandy Kruse, Lynn Napper, Betty Thomasson, Nancy Rohl, Laurie Bacon, Carol Wilson, Shari Naucler, Kris Hell (manager), Betty Richter, Dana Batdorf, Kim Johnson, Cindy Sturdevant, Carole Lindhag, Janet Nelson and coach Laurie Kohler.

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Dr. and Mrs. A. Marc Gordon.

50 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Crosby; 9 pounds, 1 ounce.

“Our” boys at Colorado College have run into a myriad of trouble, it seems. Dick Haugland picked up a broken hand prior to the University of Minnesota-Duluth hockey game and has been playing with a special brace. Glen Blumer broke his hand, but continued to play. Unfortunately, he suffered a cut over his eye later.

Falls school officials announced the recent publication of the findings of junior high science teacher Roy Blowers in connection with his study of northern upland forests on the Whitefish Lake chain in Minnesota.

Washburn Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Nelson, 1005 Second St., was elected master councilor of MacNeil Chapter, Order of DeMolay. Larry Hess was elected senior councilor and Gary LeDuc was elected junior councilor.

60 YEARS AGO

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ulch, Island View Route; weight, 7 pounds; name chosen, Libbie Ella.

Jill Marie Tekavec, 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Thramer, South International Falls, was released Sunday from Littlefork Municipal Hospital. The little girl submitted to surgery Feb. 4.

Caretaker wanted — The village of South International Falls is seeking a caretaker for the village dumpgrounds. A three-room house is provided with the position. Write or apply in person to Cleve Costley, village street commissioner.

Mr. and Mrs. John Sontorovich, 519 Fourth Ave., returned home from St. Paul where they attended the State Farm Insurance Convention in the Hotel St. Paul.

70 YEARS AGO

Named by a committee of students and the Falls High School faculty as King and Queen of Good Posture are Marvin Pearson and Jennie Boresiuk.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Olson are parents of a daughter born this morning at Northern Minnesota Hospital.

Jerry McCormack, William Arnold Murray and Peter Paul Holenko will leave this week to report for Marine Corps and Navy duty.

The Walter Groskreutz family have moved back to Littlefork from international Falls, where they lived for two months. Mr. Groskreutz is employed in the mill in the Falls and will drive to work with others from Littlefork who work there.
