Kathleen Hallgren, 73

Kathleen Hallgren, 73, of International Falls, Minn., passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society-International Falls.

Kathleen was born April 10, 1941, in International Falls, to Gustaf and Thelma (Langstaff) Browman.

She was a graduate of Falls High School with the Class of 1959 and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree with distinction.

In 1962, Kathleen married Donald Hallgren at the Congregational Church in International Falls.

Kathleen was a teacher on the north side of Minneapolis and taught disadvantaged youth before moving to Anoka, Minn., in 1965 where she taught first grade. They lived in the Minneapolis, Minn., area until 2003 when they moved back to Internationals Falls.

Kathleen enjoyed being a teacher as well as a homemaker. Some of her favorite activities were knitting, playing the piano, reading, and baking.

Although Kathleen struggled with illness most of her life, she had great faith in the Lord to help her through.

She was active in the Faith United Church of Christ, and was a warm, friendly person who made friends easily.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Margaret Browman.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Hallgren of International Falls; and brother, Richard Browman of Des Moines, Iowa.

A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at Faith United Church of Christ, International Falls.

An inurnment will be at Faith United Church Columbarium following the service.

In memoriam donations would be preferred to Faith United Church of Christ.

Axel S. Anderson

Axel S. Anderson died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014.

Altruistic, artistic, and courageous are just a few words used to describe Axel Anderson.

Axel was born Feb. 15, 1915, to Andrew and Theo (Cleveland) Anderson in Sandstone, Minn.

He attended Lake Park School in Ranier, Minn.

Axel served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, and he was traveled around Europe. Axel was a Tech Sargent, and he received three award medals for his service during this time.

Axel was a talented artist; he enjoyed woodwork and crocheting. Axel made hats, dolls, wagons and windmills, as well as many other cherished items that became gifts to his family and friends.

Axel was a generous and caring man; a Christmas tradition he held was baking pies for the homeless, and he was always quick to help a person in need.

Axel was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Theo Anderson; and his wife, Gloria (Von Moss) Anderson. Axel is survived by his siblings, Nils Anderson and Liz Johnson; his children, Judy Fink, Mark Anderson and Joyce Iglesias; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children. He will be missed.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Living Hope Baptist Church, Portland, Ore.

Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, Gresham, Ore.

Leslie Marie Mills, 63

After a short struggle with cancer, Leslie Marie Mills died on a sunny day at home, Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014. She was 63 years old.

She leaves behind her husband, Terry Mills; her sons, Mark Gagnier (Gale), Wade Gagnier and Steven Mills (Jennifer); six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Leslie was born May 15, 1951, in Fort Frances, Ontario, to father Morris Donaldson and mother Laura Donaldson, who predeceased her.

Leslie was a devoted, long-time employee at Mason’s On Main in International Falls.

She was a loving, caring, warm woman, who always put others first.

Leslie had a servant’s heart and was a genuine person and devoted friend.

Leslie is survived by her husband and children, as well as her brothers, Paul Donaldson (Sharon) and Steven Donaldson (Nadine); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved by many aunts and uncles and had a very close loving relationship with her many cousins.

Leslie requested that a graveside service be conducted in Burriss, Ontario, in the spring time. Arrangements will be announced at a later date.

The family would especially like to thank North Star Hospice for their help.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be preferred to Knox United Church, Fort Frances Ontario, Ronald McDonald House or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Darold John Promersberger

Former Littlefork, Minn., resident Darold John Promersberger died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014.

Darold was born July 26, 1931, to John Frederick (Hans) Promersberger and Margaret (DeLack) Promersberger in Littlefork.

He was married to the late Barbara (Bratten) Promersberger on Aug. 25, 1951.

He enjoyed outdoor activities and worked outdoors all of his life.

He began as a logger and lumberman working for his father and later as an independent while also owning and operating Spawn Inlet Lodge on Rainy Lake.

In 1981 he moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he worked and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

After retirement he spent summers in North Pole, Alaska, and winters in New Braunfels, Texas, making the trek each year with his camper in tow.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara in 1987; daughter, Debra in 2004; and brothers, Bernard and Richard in 2007.

He is survived by son, Jon (Brenda) of Watertown, S.D.; daughter, Tania of Fairbanks, Alaska; sisters, Darlene Lueders and Beatrice Johnson of Littlefork; his good and faithful friend, Mary Landas; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Service arrangements are pending at this time.

He will be buried at Oakley Cemetery, Littlefork.

Grace 'Coral' Dickson, 93

Grace “Coral” Dickson, 93, formerly of International Falls, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at her home in Jordan, Minn.

Coral was born to Albert and Lola (Cox) Wade on Dec. 18, 1921, at their home in Elgin, Ill.

Coral grew up and graduated high school in Elgin.

On March 7, 1940, she married Russell Dickson. Together they moved to International Falls in 1949.

Coral was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and was active in her church and service to others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lola; husband, Russell; brothers, Albert Vernon Wade and W. Robert Wade; sons, Russell W. Dickson and Michael E. Dickson; daughter-in-law, Juanita Dickson; and granddaughter, Tennille Dickson.

Coral is survived by sons, William Albert Dickson of International Falls, Thomas Charles Dickson (Lisa) of Salo, Minn., and Steven Allan Dickson of North Dakota; daughters, Sheila Lea Tate (Garnet) of International Falls, Patricia Francis Mitton (Stephen) of Jordan, Beverly Mary Maki (Sulo) of Fort Frances, Ontario, and Susan Coral Nolan (Philip) of International Falls; 29 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, International Falls.

Visitation will be one hour prior.

Interment will be in the American Legion section of Forest Hill Cemetery, International Falls.
