The International Falls Senior Legion baseball team fell at home 16-6 to the Ely Timberwolves in five innings Tuesday.
Junior legion
Before the senior legion team played, the Bronco juniors lost 10-3 to their counterparts from Ely.
Game summary
The visitors jumped on the scoreboard quickly, scoring seven runs in the first two innings of the ballgame.
On the other side, the Broncos struggled to get their bats to connect, leaving the Timberwolf lead unchecked.
The Timberwolves proceeded to score seven runs at the top of the fourth inning, putting the Broncos in a 14-0 hole, threatening to end the game early.
However, the Bronco bats finally warmed up in the bottom of the fourth.
The scoring started when Joe Talmage singled to bring Tucker Hell home.
After Talmage himself got home on a wild throw and Owen Wherley got walked home, Bryant Koenig touched the plate after a hit by Julius Maish.
Jett Tomczak then singled to get Matt Wherley home to get the Broncos out of mercy territory, and CeJay Hasbargen scored to make things 14-6.
However, the Timberwolves got two more runs at the top of the fifth to put the run differential back at 10, requiring the Broncos to get at least one run to keep the game going.
In the bottom of the inning, the Timberwolves pulled off a double play to get that third out, ending the game.
Up next
The Broncos will be back in action at 6 p.m. today when they host Barnum.
Two Broncos represented four teams at two state meets last week.
First, freshman Kelby Anderson was the lone member of both Falls High School golf teams to make the Class AA State Meet in Jordan.
Playing two rounds of golf June 15 and 16, Anderson got a two-day score of 179, good enough for 28th overall.
She also finished with the second-best score out of Section 7AA participants.
Next, senior Cody Jantzen represented the FHS track and field teams at the Class 7A State Meet in St. Michael Friday.
Jantzen finished 15th overall with his best put measuring out at over 46 feet, 4.5 inches.
I moved to International Falls in the November of 2017, travelling over 1,000 miles from my home of West Virginia to take a job as the sports writer for a small town newspaper.
Even after accepting the job and getting moved in, I was still a bit uncertain. Having come from a small town myself, I knew how tightknit such a community is, and I wasn't sure if the people here would be as accepting of an outsider such as myself.Â
As I started covering Borderland sports with a Bronco boys' hockey game against Lake of the Woods, I was happy to be proven wrong.
Borderland residents didn't hesitate to welcome me and over the past three and a half years I have come to think of International Falls as a second home.
However, all good things must come to an end.
With the Journal closing, I am taking the opportunity to move back home to West Virginia, in hopes that I will find a job a bit closer to my family than northern Minnesota.
I am still unsure what is next in my life. Maybe I will pursue another journalism job or perhaps I will start up a new career elsewhere.
To past and present Broncos, Vikings, Trojans and Voyageurs: Thank you for allowing me to cover your games and achievements. Even though I will be gone I will still be following how you all do in future games and meets.
To future Borderland athletes: I am sorry I will no longer be around for your own time in the sun, but I know you will continue to make your parents and community proud.
To the communities of International Falls, Littlefork, Indus and Birchdale: Thank you for accepting this transplanted West Virginian into your community. I hope to return someday because... you can't beat those Borderland summers!
