Lakers split weekend series with Miners

The Fort Frances Lakers hosted the English River Miners this past weekend for two Superior International Junior Hockey League games at Ice for Kids Arena with the two teams splitting the series.

On Friday night, English River overcame a two-goal deficit by scoring three third-period goals to defeat Fort Frances, 4-3.

The visiting Miners took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Alex Maticic at 7:10.

Fort Frances took a 3-1 lead in the second period after scoring three power-play goals on man-advantage efforts from Colton Spicer, Nick Minerva and Miles Nolan.

In the third period, English River pulled within a goal when Aaron Beauchamp scored unassisted at 10:32.

Richard Dartnall then tied the game at 12:11, before Miners captain Eric Champagne scored the game-winner with 4:01 left to play.

English River goalie Greg Harney made 33 saves to record the victory. Pierce Dushenko stopped 25 shots and picked up the loss in his debut in goal for Fort Frances.

LAKERS 2, MINERS 1 OT

On Saturday night, a Wyatt Cota power-play goal 1:28 into overtime lifted Fort Frances to a 2-1 victory over English River.

The Miners took a 1-0 lead after one period on a power-play goal by Maticic at 18:49.

The Lakers tied the game midway through the second period when Lucas DeBenedet, a 2013 International Falls High School graduate, put the puck past Harney for his fourth goal in 10 games since rejoining Fort Frances last month.

The game headed into overtime after neither team scored in the third period.

In overtime, the Lakers capitalized on a power-play opportunity early when Cota scored the game-winner to give Fort Frances the extra point on the night.

Dushenko made 25 saves to record his first SIJHL victory, while Harney stopped 41 shots in a losing effort for English River.

The league-leading Lakers return to action next weekend when they visit the Dryden Ice Dogs on Friday night and then face off against the second-place Thunder Bay North Stars at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday.

Bronco boys hockey team wins first game

The International Falls boys hockey team won for the first time this season after splitting two road games last weekend.

On Friday, the Broncos lost to Hibbing/Chisholm, 6-2. Wyatt Boyum and Jackson Vollom accounted for Falls' two goals.

On Saturday, the Broncos' Nathan Hauke scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Proctor, 4-3.

The Falls trailed 2-0 after two periods, before taking the lead on goals by Clay Bergstrom, Riley Nemec and Chase Bernard. The Rails scored a goal in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime.

The Broncos' season record stands at 1-3 going into Tuesday's home game against Lake of the Woods.
