After leading by six points at halftime Tuesday, the International Falls girls basketball team dominated the final 18 minutes to win at home over Warroad, 81-52.
“We played a lot better in the second half and picked it up,” said Falls head coach Shawn Gilbert. “I think that helped get a lot of easy turnovers in transition. That really helps us on our offense.”
Teagan Anderson led four Broncos scoring in double figures with 22 points, which included four 3-point baskets. Emma Gilbert added 15 points, Jena Sullivan scored 13 and Maddie Filipiak put in 11 more.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Molly McDonald with 16 points, followed by Madison Plovie with 10 points.
G. RAPIDS 71, I. FALLS 47
The Broncos trailed by 10 points at halftime Thursday night and ended up losing at Grand Rapids, 71-47.
Anderson and Emma Gilbert each scored 12 points to lead the Falls with all of Anderson’s points coming on four 3-pointers.
Heaven Hamling and Taylor Kane each scored 16 points to lead the Thunderhawks with Hannah Morris also scoring in double figures with 13 points.
The Broncos’ season record stands at 9-2 going into Friday night’s home game against Hibbing.
The International Falls boys hockey team is now on a nine-game losing streak after dropping two more games this week.
On Tuesday night, the Broncos were shut out at home by Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl, 4-0.
The Blue Devils took a 3-0 lead after the first period with a goal from Jake Robillard and two goals from Jason Murray. Virginia/MI-B closed out the scoring at 13:37 of the second period with a goal from Ian Blaeser.
The Blue Devils outshot the Falls, 21-20, with Lane Skallman and Kyle Sjoblom both seeing time in goal for the Broncos.
GREENWAY 3, I. FALLS 2
The Falls scored the first and last goals Thursday night, but not the most goals when the Broncos lost on the road to Greenway, 3-2.
After a scoreless first 17 minutes, the Falls took a 1-0 lead 8:22 into the second period on a goal from Clay Bergstrom assisted by Nathan Hauke.
The Raiders then took a one-goal lead going into final period after Kole Kalisch and Grant Troumbly each scored.
Greenway’s game-winning goal came 5:42 into the third period when Nic Dulong scored. The Broncos cut the deficit to a goal late in the third period when Jordan Tilander scored assisted by Brett Lindvall.
Shots on goal favored the Falls, 23-22, with Sjoblom recording the loss in net.
The Broncos, whose season record dropped to 3-12, will seek to snap their losing streak Tuesday when they host Eveleth-Gilbert.

The 17-year-old International Falls High School senior is a defensive player on the Bronco girls hockey team.
The International Falls boys swimming and diving team competed in its first dual meet of the season Thursday when the Broncos hosted Mesabi East and lost, 90-65.
“We're still trying to feel out some events and what are the appropriate events for each of (the Broncos), so that they're consistent now throughout the season and getting practice in the same event,” said Falls coach Hailey Silvers.
The Giants, who fielded a much larger team in numbers than the Broncos, cruised to victory winning all the contested events with more than one entry and didn't score any points in the last two events, the 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay, which they swam for exhibition purposes only.
Among the contested events, the Falls picked up individual runner-up finishes from Jared Hunter in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 45.13 seconds) and 100 freestyle (1:04.15) and Alex Belanger in the 50 freestyle (28.02) and 100 butterfly (1:12.39).
In the two contested relays, Hunter, Belanger, John Cowman and Cole Tatsak placed second in the 200 medley relay (2:06.42) and Belanger, Hunter, Tatsak and Joey Griffith finished runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.94).
The Broncos return to action Saturday in an invitational at Virginia.
The Minnesota College Athletic Conference basketball season began Wednesday night for Rainy River Community College with mixed results for the men’s and women’s teams.
Sam Stirgus sank a half-court shot with 1.6 seconds left to play to lift the RRCC men’s basketball team to a 77-76 victory at Hibbing.
“We didn’t shoot well (Wednesday night) and Hibbing did,” said RRCC head coach Kristofer Babler. “You live by (the 3-point shot) and die by it. (Wednesday night) we struggled, but hit when it counted. We were lucky to win.”
RRCC, which led 47-41 at halftime, had two players end up with more than 20 points. Ahmad Poche scored a game-high 25 points with Stirgus adding 23 more.
Hibbing had four players score in double figures led by Noah Davis with 17 points.
The victory improved the Voyageurs’ season record to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the MCAC North.
HIBBING 57, RRCC WOMEN 42
The RRCC women’s basketball team had only five available players when the Voyageurs trailed by five points at halftime and ended up losing at Hibbing, 57-42.
Shania Thompson led the Voyageurs with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Dominique Hines was RRCC’s only other player to score in double figures with 10 points.
Hibbing was led in scoring by Amber Zapata with 17 points and Sarah Stolp with 13 points.
With the loss, RRCC’s record dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in the MCAC North.
The Voyageurs play their conference home opener Saturday against Vermilion with the RRCC women tipping off at 1 p.m. and the men slated to start at 3 p.m.

“During stretches we played pretty good,” said Broncos head coach Derek Dowty, who also noted the defense played well in the second half.
Ben Humbert recorded a double-double for the Falls by scoring 29 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. Other Broncos scoring in double figures included Clay Tomczak with 13 points and Jack Bartkowski putting in 11 more.
The win improved the Falls' season record to 9-4 going into Friday's road game against Mesabi East.
