The Rainy River Community College women’s hockey team had another two-game series last weekend in which the Voyageurs played better in the opening game.
RRCC opened the road series Saturday against Minot State University with a 3-1 victory.
“We played well on Saturday,” said Voyageurs head coach Jeff Wickstrom.
The Voyageurs’ first goal came on the power play unassisted by Micah Cabral.
RRCC then recorded an even-strength goal when Hailey Clendenning scored assisted by Shelby Tymkin and Victoria Taylor. Taylor, who entered the season as one of the Voyageurs’ two goalies, is now seeing time on the ice as a skater with the team’s roster now down to 10 players.
MSU’s only goal was scored unassisted in the third period by Brigitte Lafontaine.
RRCC’s final goal came from Katie Sinclair assisted by Tymkin.
Shay Perry recorded the win in goal for the Voyageurs. Kayla Wakelin picked up the loss in net for the Beavers.
MSU 6, RRCC 5 (SO)
Sunday’s game remained tied after an overtime period with MSU ending up defeating RRCC in a shootout, 6-5.
“The bounces didn’t go in our direction,” Wickstrom said.
The Beavers scored the only goal of the opening period unassisted by Jody Goforth.
The Voyageurs then took a 3-1 lead after two periods on goals from Clendenning, Connor Coleman and Shilo Beck.
Six goals were scored in the final period with MSU recording four them. RRCC’s two third-period goals came from Tymkin and Beck.
In the shootout following the scoreless overtime, Makayla Sandvold and Kayla Buck put in goals for the Beavers. The Voyageurs’ only shootout goal was scored by Beck.
Shots on goal favored RRCC, 30-27, with Perry picking up the loss in net. Wakelin recorded the win in goal for MSU.
The Voyageurs return to action this coming Saturday and Sunday when they host Northern Michigan at Bronco Arena.
