Edgar A. Williams, 89, of Littlefork, Minn., died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Littlefork Care Center, Littlefork.
Edgar was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Shevlin, Minn., the son of Henry and Bertha Williams.
Edgar grew up with his four brothers and sister on the family farm in Shevlin.
He married Lillian Jordahl on Dec. 28, 1942, in Bagley, Minn.
In 1942 he was drafted in the Navy, where he was anti-aircraft gunner-topside. He served on the USS California and saw military action in seven major engagements including Iwo Jima, the Marshall Islands and took part in a Good Will Tour which included Africa at the end of the war.
Edgar was employed as a logger/trucker in Bagley until the shutdown of the Bagley Peeler. In 1959 he went to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he was employed at various construction jobs. After returning from Alaska he moved his family to Littlefork, where he was a piece-cutter/woodsworker until he started employment with Boise Cascade, where he was employed until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement he worked for many years for Koochiching County mowing grass along county highways and right-of-ways.
Edgar was a great mechanic and enjoyed gardening and hunting. He loved to cook and enjoyed having everyone over for Christmas dinner.
Edgar was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Lillian; parents, Henry and Bertha (Honsted) Williams; brothers, Henry Jr., Howard and Kenneth; sister, Agnes; daughter-in-law, Bella Williams; and great-grandson, Abe Fagerstrom.
Edgar is survived by brother, Ray (Vondra) Williams of Grand Rapids; sons, Eddie (Shelley) Williams of Littlefork, Richard (Rosie) Williams of International Falls, Kenneth Williams of Rochester and Gregory (Sue) Williams of Littlefork; two daughters, Sharon Belanger of International Falls and Sandra (Don) Williams of Lake George; eight grandchildren – Shane Williams, Marci Boes, Kelly Fagerstrom, Kristi Nelson, Kim Belanger, Shawn Williams, Amanda Jones and Kory Williams; 13 great-grandchildren — Makenzie and Tanner Boes, Isaac and Ben Fagerstrom, Chandan Street, Brenden, Andi, and Addison Williams, Talon Porter, Kalab Roussy, Kylan Boorman, Joshua Laurin and Liam Jones; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, “Tux.”
Visitation will be one hour prior to the 3 p.m. funeral service Friday, Dec. 21, at Littlefork Evangelical Free Church, Littlefork.
Interment will be at Oakley Cemetery, Littlefork.
