Mamie Leggett

Mamie Karina (Quinn) Leggett, 80, of International Falls, Minn., died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Littlefork Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Devlin, Ontario. After attending school in Crozier for a few years, Mamie moved to Fort Frances.

She was the devoted daughter of Ernest and Lillian Hockenson.

Mamie and Eugene Arthur (Shorty) Leggett were united in marriage on Feb. 22, 1951, in International Falls, Minn.

They became parents to four children, who all survive her. They are Robert (Carol) of Makinen, Minn., Bert (Beverly) of International Falls, Sandy (Chuck) LeMoine of Clinton Township, Mich., and Brenda (George Folta) Leggett of International Falls. Grandchildren include Justin Leggett, Travis Stoltz, Dr. Elias (Dr. JoAnn Wang) LeMoine, Hailey (Evan Hughes) Stoltz, Danielle Leggett and Brett (McKenzie) Leggett. Her great-grandchildren include Addison Leggett, Easton Arthur Leggett and Lillian LeMoine.

Also surviving Mamie is her mother, Lillian Hockenson; her sister, Nancy (Dale) Krueger; her nephew, Michael (Christine) Krueger; her niece, Linda (Joe) Kawulia; and their children.

Preceding Mamie in death was her loving husband, Eugene, in October 2011; her father, Ernest Hockenson; and her parents.

Raising her children and being with her grandchildren were the focus of most of Mamie’s life. Being a Cub Scout leader, a Band Mother, a chaperone at the teenage dances or driving kids to the beach were just a few of the many examples of how she kept involved with her children.

Her grandchildren were as much at home with her as they were with their own parents. She spoiled them as often as she could.

Education was something that Mamie always considered important. After raising her family she went back to school and earned her GED. This did not satisfy her desire to accomplish more. She continued her education at Rainy River Community College and graduated with a certificate in accounting. This was really a point of pride for her.

Many people around International Falls knew if there was a band playing during the past few years they could expect to see Mamie and Shorty on the dance floor. She adored Shorty and knew how much he enjoyed dancing, especially when Pat Porter was playing.

Mamie was a baptized member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and a regular member of the women’s Bible study group.

Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Green-Larsen Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Evangelical Covenant Church. A light luncheon at the church will follow.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
