Last week, Mitch Hackenmueller of St. Michael was told by a financial institution that to complete the financial transaction for his first home an additional unexpected $1,700 would be needed. So what to do? He decided to worry about it the next week and in the interim drove to International Falls to visit and spend the weekend with relatives. Hackenmueller is shown during his first time fishing sturgeon — with the first sturgeon that he has ever caught, and in the process, won the North American Sturgeon Championships held Saturday in Birchdale. The winning fish measured 55 inches; a 53 inch runner up was landed by Chris Lee. Hackenmueller’s first place prize — $1,708 — will likely go to good use, according to organizers.
