Art? Crime? Both?

This is one of dozens of train cars tagged somewhere along the line by graffiti artists and/or criminals. It recently sat in the MD&W rail yard in International Falls. The argument has gone on for decades now, depending on one’s point of view or financial investment in the canvas of private property they use, if graffiti is art or just trashy. No matter what one thinks, the laws are clear: It’s very illegal and expensive to cover over. And sometimes the markings are tied to gang activity, too. Yet it also is celebrated and can be found on train cars around the world.
