The grass is a little greener in Borderland following Monday’s rain.
A total of .87 inches of rain was recorded throughout the day Monday, and meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Duluth say that amount alone put the area above the average amount of rain received by Aug. 10.
“The area is running .14 inches above normal,” said Dean Melde, NWS meteorologist. “It’s a little wet so far, but really, we’re already a third of the way through the month.”
Melde said the early-week rain came from an area of low pressure that moved through the region.
“The pressure system was strong enough to produce a few thunderstorms that gave us all the rain,” he explained.
While Monday’s rain was the most the Falls had seen in awhile, areas around Duluth experienced flooding after receiving more than two inches of rain.
Nonetheless, the .87 inches of rain brought relief to many locals after July’s heat left the area dry and brown. Melde said July ended 1.22 inches of rain below normal and because temperatures were quite warm, things dried out more quickly.
“A lot of times in the summer, thunderstorms can bring a lot of rain to make up for those below average times,” he said.
August is typically a wetter month, Melde added and the average amount of rainfall for the area sits at 3.14 inches.
“International Falls is already well on its way to that,” he said.
As the for the rest of the month, Melde told The Journal Wednesday that another low pressure system is making its way north by the end of the week, but it appeared that rain wouldn’t quite hit the Falls.
Temperature changes
Anyone waking up in Borderland Wednesday may have noticed a chill in the air.
Wednesday set a record low temperature of 39 degrees, which tied the old record set in 1982.
The NWS website explained that the cool morning in the northland came from a combination of high pressure, clear skies and light winds.
“The conditions were perfect,” Melde said of morning chill.
The normal low temperature for the month of August in International Falls is 52 degrees and the normal high is 78 degrees.
“We’re past our warm peak,” Melde said. “It goes by so fast.”
