Backus Kids Club
Backus Kids Club is open Monday, no school, teacher in-service day, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kids Club regular hours on school days are 3:30 to 6 p.m. Call Backus at 285-7225 for information.
Film festival
“On the Edge Film Festival” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Backus Auditorium. Participants are welcome to vote for their favorite films of the evening. Admission is $2 plus a donation to the Food Shelf. Sponsored by the International Falls Public Library and Backus Community Center. Films are generally appropriate for ages 13 and above. For information, contact Diane at the library.
Quilt guild
Whispering Pines Quilt Guild will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Family Life Center of Evangelical Covenant Church. Quilters are reminded to wear a nametag and bring a fat quarter of their color choice of fabric for the drawing. Show and Tell items are welcome. Area quilters of any level of experience are welcome to attend.
Soup luncheon, bake sale
The public is welcome to attend the “Warm Your Gizzard” soup luncheon Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 530 Sixth St. Soup will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $ 6 per person. Zion Lutheran Church Women will also offer baked goods for sale.
Book club
Rainy River Book Club will meet at noon Saturday at Lenard’s. Books for discussion are “The Pearl” by John Steinbach and “Animal House” by George Orwell.
Tax training
AARP tax training will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at KOOTASCA. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should call Susan Dion at 283-4313 or Betty Simon, 283-4076. Volunteers are needed for answering phones, setting up appointments, intake people to assist in getting forms filled out, and actual tax preparation. Calls and appointment set-ups begin Tuesday by calling 283-5236. Volunteers will begin doing taxes Feb. 1.
