The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued a penalty of $3,525 to Boise White Paper in International Falls for water quality violations.
Boise Inc. owns the Falls paper mill and Boise White Paper.
Citations were issued across the state by MPCA to various businesses in 34 enforcement cases in the second quarter of 2012. The routine enforcement and “ongoing efforts to promote environmental compliance” resulted in more than $326,000 in penalties in Minnesota, according to a news release. Various penalties were assessed for violations in air quality, solid waste, hazardous waste, and others throughout the state.
Of the fines, nearly $115,000 will be spent toward the completion of supplemental environmental projects.
Imposing monetary penalties is only part of the MPCA’s enforcement process, the release said.
“Agency staff continue to provide assistance, support and information on the steps and tools necessary to achieve compliance for any company or local government that requests it,” stated the release.
