Borderland Families may have a shorter distance to drive if they are looking for a pediatric therapist.

True Care Medical Therapy Center recently opened its doors in Cook, and physical therapist and owner Ida Haxton said that families who used to bring children to Hibbing or even Duluth for physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy may find the services they seek a bit closer to home.

The name, she said, reflects her commitment to her patients and her passion for the job.

“We do truly care for these kids,” she said, hoping that through her services she can help them reach their full potential.

“It’s kind of a passion of mine,” she added.

Haxton said her concentration on pediatric therapy makes the business unique to the area. She said she spent eight years working with children through the Northland Special Education Cooperative, and decided to start this private practice.

“I wanted to provide a service that I saw a need for in the school system,” she said.

In addition to children, Haxton said that the service also treats disabled adults. The younger patients are unique because they have differing abilities and development, she said. And many of these children grow into adults who still need the services they offer, she added, noting that the treatments were geared to those with an ongoing disability.

Haxton, a physical therapist, and an occupational therapist are currently seeing clients. She anticipates adding a speech therapist soon. She said offering the triad of rehabilitation services was important because some patients need all three services, making their practice convenient.

Some of the items that the practice targets are balance, coordination, sensory integration, visual-motor problems, and attention issues.

“There is a huge variety of things that we do,” Haxton said.

The therapy center started seeing patients on Nov. 2 and is still in the process of adding finishing touches. For example, Haxton said a new treadmill was just delivered late last week.
