The International Falls City Council Tuesday agreed to purchase video taping equipment in the amount of $3,100.

The recommendation to purchase the equipment came from Councilor Cynthia Jaksa who said the purpose of the equipment would be to tape council meetings to put on the city’s website.

City Administrator Rod Otterness said the set price was necessary to invest in quality equipment and that it was a “realistic” price, but could end up costing less.

In other action Tuesday, the council discussed an effort to make it easier for Americans who have minor criminal records to cross the border in Canada.

Falls Mayor Shawn Mason told the council she appreciated of the effort and that if laws are changed, it would be a plus for tourism in both International Falls and Canada.

The council also agreed to write a letter of support of Pres. Barack Obama’s executive order announcing new initiatives to significantly increase travel and tourism to the U.S.

Mason acknowledged that Destination Voyageurs National Park would be an excellent component to Obama’s order.

Also Tuesday, the council discussed the future of City Beach improvements and whether a grant application should be resubmitted to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Legacy Grant Program.

Mason said because the first grant was denied, the City Beach Task Force will meet to discuss the future of improvements to the City Beach building and the beach as a whole.
