They may be only four voices and a tambourine, but the members of Tonic Sol-fa appear to be on their way to the top.
The a cappella quartet from St. Cloud that has won an Emmy Award and appeared on NBC’s Today Show will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Backus Community Center Auditorium.
The group, made up of Jared Dove, Mark McGowan, Shaun Johnson, and Greg Bannwarth, has been voted into the Midwest Music Hall of Fame and has averaged over 150 shows annually in 48 states with music in radio stations and at retail stores nationwide, continues the website.
In addition to Tuesday’s concert, Tonic Sol-fa will offer an arts experience workshop to area students. Backus has been awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board grant with funding supplied by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment.
The group will visit International Falls schools on Monday and Littlefork and Indus schools on Tuesday. St. Thomas Catholic School students and home-schooled students will also have the opportunity to visit with the group from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday at Backus Community Center.
Students attending the workshop will have the opportunity to listen to Tonic Sol-fa perform and work one-on-one with the group.
According to the group’s official website, in the midst of touring, Tonic Sol-fa has been awarded numerous original song and album awards in pop, gospel and holiday genres, and appeared in the pages of Newsweek magazine. Outings with Jay Leno, Shawn Colvin, and Garrison Keillor have propelled album sales to more than 2 million copies and have earned the group thousands of fans, says the site.
Recently, Tonic Sol-fa’s third public television special was broadcast to more than 1,800 stations across the United States. The group won its first Emmy Award in the “Musical Composition/Arrangement” category for a song performed in a Toys for Tots Public Service Announcement.
Tonic Sol-fa has also previously performed on the Backus stage as part of the Border Concert Association series in 2011.
Admission to the show is $12 for adults; $6 for students; and $25 for families. prekindergarten children are free.
