Local celebration coming soon
In the planning for 10 months, organizers of Kabetogama’s 2009 Lady Slipper Festival welcome all area families to partake in a wide range of activities over a three-day period.
The festival is scheduled for July 10, 11, and 12 and is positioned around the Kabetogama Community Hall.
Handcrafted goods, food, music, presentations, and fun for kids will be staged to celebrate the area known as the gateway to Voyageurs National Park. The Kabetogama Historical Society will display cabin furniture, nostalgic photographs and unique treasures from Kabetogama's past.
Held rain or shine, but nearly stormed out last year, organizer Jill Kiner told The Journal they are “planning on shine this year.” She adds that there’s plenty of parking with only moderate walking required to enjoy the event.
An Outdoor Juried Arts & Crafts Show will be in place throughout the festival and goods including the following will be offered for sale: antler carvings, custom engraving, log furniture, cabin decor, rugs, sewn, crocheted, weaved, woolen and knitted items, natural soaps and lotions, jewelry, candles, birch-bark items and other nature crafts, glass work, pottery, crystal wares, leather crafts, wood crafts, Ukrainian eggs, wildlife photography, note cards, and clothing.
The International Early Iron Antique Car Show will be held Sunday from 10-3 p.m. at Voyageur Marine. Portrait sketching will be available. Music by Ron. E. Cash will be performed on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Paul Imholte, String Man & Strolling Musician, will be appearing daily.
Daily speakers from in and around the lake areas are also planned:
• Friday, 2 p.m. — VNP Resource staff will speak on “Natural Resource Monitoring” and “Research in Voyageurs National Park.”
• Friday Night — Woodenfrog Campfire Program “ Last of the Lynx.”
• Saturday, 11 a.m. — VNP Ranger Kevin Grossheim and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Bob Skundberg will give a presentation on water safety.
• Saturday, 1 p.m. — Kettle Falls family descendant Mike Williams will present the “Life and History of Kettle Falls.”
• Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Interpretive staff available for public discussion about VNP.
Kabetogama is celebrating their abundant wildflower, the lady slipper, and its geography within Voyageurs National Park, named for the French-Canadian “voyageurs” who paddled large birch bark canoes carrying trade goods and furs between the Canadian northwest and Montreal.
Lake Kabetogama is the entrance to VNP and Kabetogama itself is home to over 200 remote, scenic islands.
