The AARP Ice Box of the Nation organization met Nov. 10 at Koochiching County Senior Center.

Tom Wagner, president, called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. The main discussion was the evidence of poverty and hunger in our area. It was decided to donate funds to the local Falls Hunger Food Shelf. It was decided to forgo a club Christmas party and all members were urged to donate, to a local charity, the amount they might have spent on the Christmas party. Mentioned as important places to donate to were The Salvation Army, The Angel Tree, personal church drives, Borderland Humane Society or other charitable projects.

Wagner noted that he is our local representative and the means to pass on our thoughts and comments to the state and national AARP organizations. While we may not fully support every decision the national organization makes, they are our voice in Congress and in the media. It is important that all over age 50 persons have a outlet to discuss and promote their needs and ideas. The AARP organization is concerned only with the needs of senior citizens.

Due to the busy holiday season it was decided to not meeting in December, and we will next meet Jan. 12, 2011. We are resuming the collection of our very small yearly dues. Dues paid in January will then cover the entire 2011 meeting schedule.

Charlotte Saari served refreshments and the meeting closed with the reminder to donate to local charities and our January meeting date.
