The May 9 meeting of the AARP Ice Box of the Nation was conducted at Koochiching County Senior Center with president, Tom Wagner calling the meeting to order at 1 p.m.

The meeting was immediately given over to Douglas Skrief and Leslee Loop of the Koochiching Aging Options Agency. This agency is lead by a volunteer board of directors and was formed in the summer of 2009. Their mission is to offer education, information and assistance to senior citizens and those who care for them. The staff is easily reached by calling the office which is given housing by Koochiching County, within the Forestland building.

The main programs offered are: Senior Wheels, one-day medical transportation for seniors; Senior Companions, which offer seniors friendly assistance in day to day activities: monthly free food boxes; and the agency is a clearinghouse of information of services and education for those caring for frail and at-risk seniors.

We were reminded that the Northern Lights senior group will  again tour Voyageurs National Park on the big boat. Membership is required. Wagner has more information.

The Ice Box meetings are now on vacation until 1 p.m. Sept. 12 at the senior center. All seniors are welcome to attend.

Refreshments were served and members enjoyed time to visit with each other and give suggestions for program topics for future meetings.
