There’s excitement coming to Littlefork Sunday. Not only is there a “meet and greet” for a potential new Lutheran pastor, but there is a square dance celebration the same day. The Koo-chi-ching Twirlers of Littlefork and the Pairs & Squares of Fort Frances are jointly ending their square dance year with a celebration dance. The event will be at the Littlefork Community Building and is open to anyone who wants to dance including Snowbirds who may be in the area or to onlookers who may be interested in having fun.
Invitations have been sent out to dancers with clubs in Kenora, Dryden and Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada as well as clubs in Duluth, Grand Rapids, Aitkin, Bemidji, Park Rapids, etc. in Minnesota.
Roger McNeil from Fargo, N.D., and Donna Stone from Park Rapids will be square dance caller and round dance cuer.
Round dancing is another form of dancing where the dancers move simultaneously to the same ballroom dancing steps in a big circle around the dance floor to the calls of a cuer.
Dancing will take place between 2:30 and 5 p.m. with a picnic style supper provided after the dance. Hamburgers, brats, and a baked potato will be furnished by the club. The balance of the goodies will be provided potluck by the host clubs.
Square dancing provides a low to medium aerobic exercise that strengthens your heart muscle as well as keeping your mind sharp. It has been said that square dancing can add many good and productive years to your life.
We as square dancers are always looking for new dancers to join our club(s). The Koo-chi-ching Twirlers has just completed its second year in Borderland while the Pairs & Squares have been continually operating for about 58-59 years. One couple in that club, Bert and Marg Smeeth, has been dancing 50-plus years. They received an award for this milestone this past year.
Square dancing is an activity that is chemical free and is open to all members of the family and is one of the few activities that the whole family can enjoy. It is open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 98.
