The local dementia caregivers met at 11:30 a.m. June 3 in the back room at Barney’s Family Restaurant. They have been very accommodating and are allowing us to use their space. We had a very nice group in attendance. Our attendance has been growing almost every month lately, so at least we are reaching out to folks in our area and they are responding.

One of our supporters did just lose a family member within the last month, and their loss was devastating. Many of us have gone through this, plus many more will have that to contend with in the future. But remember, we are there to aid any family member who may want to call. My phone number is 286-5525 and Norma Krats, 285-7015. Both of us are there for you.

Here are a few ideas which work quite well with a loved one. Reminiscing with your loved ones, putting photos in an album, taking pictures of each other, talking about your childhood, watching old movies (our library has a very nice selection and they are free to take out), have them help separate laundry, washing fruits or veggies, also folding towels or washcloths with you, plus watering the plants (just make sure you don’t give them too big a container to pour out of or that could be a disaster!), a measuring cup works fine. Another fun thing my Sam and I did was dance in the kitchen to some fun music, as we both loved to dance. I think you just have to let loose and enjoy every moment you have with them. I grant you this is not always so easy, but enjoy them as long as you have them.

We will not meet during the month of July.

The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 5 at Barney’s Family Restaurant.
