Theme for this year’s essay was ‘Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?’

The first place winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 2948 and Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy essay contest was Hallie R. Bates. Theme for this year’s essay was “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?” Bates received a plaque and certificate and her speech was forwarded on to the VFW District level.

Attending the ceremony were her parents and younger sisters.

The Voice of Democracy program was created in 1947 for high school students in grades 9 through 12. The program on a national level provides more than $3 million annually in scholarships and is not limited to public schools, but also includes parochial schools and the home-schooled. The 2012-2013 essay theme is “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?”
