Hazardous waste collection
Koochiching County is having a hazardous waste collection from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Recycling/Transfer Facility. Households are able to safely dispose of products at no charge. Business collection is also scheduled, and must be pre-registered with the Clean Shop program prior to collection day. Application forms are available in the Environmental Services Office or call the Clean Shop at 218-726-1602. Last collection of the year. Silent auction
The Education First Students to Rome and Athens will host a silent auction from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday during the International Falls Bass Championship in the craft booth area. Items for auction include a Jim West painting, two quilts and many wood crafts. Auctions will end each night at 7 and winners can claim their items at the booth. BHS yard sale
A yard sale for the Borderland Humane Society is planned for 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 1 in the alley at 1312 11th St. All proceeds will help fund the new BHS Holding Facility. Donations are needed, however no clothing or items from previous garage sales that did not sell. Make arrangements to drop off gently used items by calling 283-2928 or 218-235-8735. Drop off after 3 p.m. at 1312 11th St.
Junior Rangers at VNP
Let’s Move Outside — Junior Rangers at Voyageurs National Park, is planned for 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rainy Lake Visitor Center. Test knowledge and skills of plants and animals that call Voyageurs home. Explore different survival techniques used by some of the hardiest inhabitants at a touch table located in the visitor center. Afterwards, test skills on a hike with a park naturalist. Participants will be sworn in as official Junior Rangers and receive a badge, patch, and Let’s Move Outside sticker. Recommended ages 12 and under.
Night Explorer Series
Starry, Starry Night; Night Explorer Series — “Star Light, Star Bright, First Star…” at Voyageurs National Park. The public is welcome to join members of Duluth’s Arrowhead Astronomical Society in viewing the night sky using high-powered telescopes. Meet at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center at 8 p.m. Saturday. Program begins with an indoor introduction and observation starts a half-hour after sunset. Bring lawn chair and insect repellent. Those interested can come for the entire program or stop by any time after dark for the telescope viewing. Program is sponsored by Voyageurs National Park Association. No fee or registration is required to attend. Recommended ages 10 and up.
