Area music students will be featured in Borderland Musical Showcase Saturday at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Backus Community Center Auditorium. The event, sponsored by Tuesday Musicale and Backus Community Center, will feature a variety of vocal and instrumental numbers.

Students in grades K-12 will perform on the Backus stage — with the audience also seated on stage for an informal concert atmosphere. This will be a first-time experience for many of these students, according to a statement. Encouraged by their music instructors and families, many of them responded to participate and several will be accompanied by their teachers, said the same release.

Former Tuesday Musicale summer music camp scholarship recipients are expected to participate in the event. They will be joined by the 2011 Tuesday Musicale scholarship recipients in addition to other area student musicians. Douglas Skrief will be master of ceremonies.

Music instructors to the featured students are: Jeannie Strand, Elizabeth Strandberg, Michelle Boelk, John Faith, Joe Belanger and May Ann Kalar, of International Falls; Nicholas Strandberg of Indus; and Aron Bohnert of Littlefork.

In carrying on a Tuesday Musicale tradition, Margarete Kostiuk, accompanied by Jessie Laurion, will close the program with “God Bless America.” Both are long-time members of Tuesday Musicale.

The public is invited to attend the musical event. Admission is a free-will offering and proceeds will benefit the Tuesday Musicale Music Camp Scholarship Program and Backus Community Center.
