Rainy River Community College has hired a new part-time American Indian Studies instructor, Stephen D. Briggs, who will begin his tenure Aug. 20. “I am grateful for the opportunity to teach at my hometown school and am looking forward to working with the entire RRCC and International Falls community,” said Briggs.

Briggs graduated from Falls High School in 2005 and spent his first college year at RRCC. He transferred to Fond Du Lac Tribal and Community College, where he graduated in 2008 with a degree in law enforcement and associate of arts. He then transferred to The College of St. Scholastica where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in indigenous studies and a bachelor of arts in history, both of which had an educational focus.

Since 2008, Briggs has been on the Minnesota Indian Education Association Board of Directors where he has designed and led workshops for secondary educators on the realities of college life from a student perspective. Briggs also works with AEOA Free at Last Program as a chaperone and advisor to their programs working with transitional youth. During his time at St. Scholastica, he worked for the group Storm’s Advocates, where he providing education resources and planned campus wide events that promoted healthy lifestyle choices.

During the summer, Briggs has worked at RRCC as an assistant teacher for the Ojibwe Immersion Camps and as a grant assistant to the American Indian Studies Department.

Briggs will teach American Indian History, Native American Contemporary issues, Native American Laws and Treaties, Ojibwe Language, and Anishinaabe Art courses at Rainy River Community College.
