Every year on July 1, the city of Ranier finds itself helping to celebrate Canada’s anniversary of independence.
With fireworks ignited just across shared waters which also separate two nations, local families gather along the shoreline in Ranier for a spectacular view of the colors that explode over an international border.
In the black evening sky Wednesday, Rainy Lake’s Sand Bay was dotted with the lights of drifting boats that waited in anticipation of the Fort Frances fireworks. Ranier streets were lined with parked cars, and area families were decked out across the small town with lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and smiles.
With every bursting, glittering anenome, the silhouetted shoreline of Borderland’s neighbor was visible for a fleeting moment, reminding viewers that fun, and awe, and wonder — is universal.
