Canadian Decoration Day was observed June 2. Decoration Day, which began in 1928, honors veterans who survived wars and came home.
This year, Fort Frances Legion Branch 29 and Auxiliary hosted ceremonies for northwestern Ontario. Color Guards from three zones and seven branches of Legions, along with representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2948 and Auxiliary of International Falls, marched into the cemetery with the Fort Frances Highlanders.
The cemetery was adorned with Canadian flags on veterans’ graves. Both the Canadian and American national anthems were sung.
District Commander Marlene Gagne gave a prayer for all veterans who came home but are now deceased. There was a laying of wreaths, a two-minute moment of silence followed by the singing of “God Save Our Queen.”
