The Ice Box of the Nation Chapter of AARP met Wednesday at the Holiday Inn for the first meeting after the summer break.

The Dutch treat luncheon allowed the members to socialize and hear a report by Lil Koranda regarding the many plans being considered for a national health coverage program. Koranda reminded everyone that there is no one plan being endorsed or up for a vote in congress. There is much work needed to be done before a plan is expected to be ready for presentation to both the U.S. House and Senate. Koranda was given this information by telephone conference set up by the National AARP and Sen. Amy Klobucher.

The local AARP chapter has been meeting once a month on the second Wednesday, excepting the three summer months. Dues are very low and affordable. However, membership has slowly been dropping to the level that disbanding is being considered.

The next meeting will be a frank discussion regarding the future of the chapter. Options to consider are: holding quarterly meetings, disbanding, a one year moratorium on meetings, and other ideas the membership may propose. The meeting, set for 12:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Koochiching County Senior Center, will be critical to the future of the chapter. All present members are requested to attend and the interested public will be most welcome. Chrystal Clance will serve as hostess and will provide refreshments.
