We’ve got some great new books to help your kids establish their reading habits.
The movie “Soul Surfer” was released last spring and the library has a copy of the movie, but we also have a copy of the book upon which the movie was based. Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton is the riveting story of a teenage surfer who lost an arm to a shark and the day after surgery asked when she could surf again.
One of my favorite authors, Garth Nix, has a new book out. Troubletwisters is about two twins around whom strange things occur. They are sent to live with Grandma X suddenly and they didn’t even know they had a grandma. Are they ready to deal with their powers and the responsibility that comes with that power?
A couple of authors have new titles in established series. Erin Hunter recently released book 6 in her acclaimed “Seekers” series called Spirits in the Stars. Toklo, Lusa, Kallik and Ujurak continue across the ice, when they finally reach land they find all the bears sick. Can they help? What can three just out of cubhood bears do?
Lynne Jonell continues her series about Emmy in Emmy and the Rats in the Belfry. Emmy isn’t your ordinary run-of-the-mill girl. She can talk with rats, shrink to the size of a rat and even become a rat. She has escaped numerous plots against her and figures life can be boring for a while as she visits her elderly aunts, but life is rarely boring for long.
Those whose children love scaring themselves or just want to learn about the scarier things in the world then be sure and borrow The Legend of the Werewolf by Thomas Kingsley Troupe or Haunted Houses by Adam Stone. Both of these non-fiction junior room titles are short but pack lots of information between their covers. Both titles would make a great Halloween night read.
If you are looking for interesting and different ways to explore the world of reading and numbers with your young children then take a look at Mo Willems series “Elephant and Piggie.” The newest title is I Broke My Trunk! The friendship between the pig and the elephant is delightful and these easy readers with thrill beginning readers.
Ten Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrations by Lois Ehlert seeks to do for numbers what Chicka Chicka Boom Boom did for letters. And if counting to 10 is too easy, try You Can Count on Monsters by Richard Evan Schwartz for a wacky, wild look at numbers up to 100.
Learning the letters of the alphabet is a key preschool skill and If Rocks Could Sing by Leslie McGuirk and Al Pha’s Bet by Amy Krouse Rosenthal will help you and your preschooler enjoy learning about letters.
Let’s close this week with a book to explore and encourage creativity. Inkblot by Margaret Peot will help you ‘drip, splat, and squish your way to creativity.’
