Falls native John Smart and the band Horizon are scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Backus Community Center.

Smart told The Journal that the classic-rock, country and ’50s group, which will be performing for the third time at Backus, is “looking forward to one of its best concerts yet.”

Horizon is comprised of Smart and his son Jonathan Smart; and Kris, George and Donna Oberton, all of Grand Rapids; and Steve Cain of Hibbing.

The band also plans to introduce some new members on the stage. Jade Bullock, 13-year-old granddaughter of John Smart, will be singing "Love Store" by Taylor Swift. And fiddler Jamie Werdier will be accompanying the band on some selections.

An exciting addition to the concert this year, according to Smart, are the door prizes that have been added. A Sony 32-inch flat-screen TV as well as dinner certificates from the Chocolate Moose, Sandy’s Place, The Junction, and The Rose Garden will be awarded to ticket buyers. T-shirts and dinner/lodging packages sponsored by Backus and Super 8 Motel will also be won during the evening.

The band performs songs by Dwight Yokum, Elvis Presley, and others. Jonathan does his versions of “Unchained Melody” and “When a Man Loves a Woman,” which have been crowd favorites, according to his dad.

Advance tickets are available at City Drug and the Backus Office in International Falls; Betty’s in Fort Frances; and at the door.

Tickets are $12, adults; $6, students; and $30 for a family. More information is available at the Backus Community Center, 285-7225.

John Smart was a Borderland resident for 50 years.
