The Ice Box of the Nation Chapter of AARP met Oct. 13 at Koochiching County Senior Center.
President Wagner called the informal meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. Violet Johnson was a new guest and we hope to see her at more meetings. All “over 55 persons” are welcome to visit and/or join our group. By general consensus, on January first we will begin collecting a very small yearly dues.
President Wagner reminded everyone that the local fire department will provide and install free smoke detectors. Also, Christmas time is a good time to replace batteries, and check carbon monoxide detectors.
Information from the Falls Good Samaritan Center notes that they expect to break ground in 2011 for a new facility. They plan for all private rooms with private baths and a fully stocked crafts and activity room. However, due to the staffing needs and per patient cost, an Alzheimer’s unit is not in the plan.
A lively discussion regarding the upcoming elections was held and all were reminded that AARP is a neutral organization and as a group we do not support any candidate or political party. If fact, if we have a speaker from one specific party, we must also make time available to all other candidates and party supporters.
Several members noted the dire need for a local kidney dialysis center. It is hoped that fund raising and work on a local center will begin soon.
The members then agreed to a donation to the Falls Hunger Coalition.
Refreshments were served and Charlotte Saari offered to serve as hostess for the Nov. 10 meeting.
