The Ice Box of the Nation Chapter of AARP met at 1 p.m. March 14 at Koochiching  County Senior Center.

President Tom Wagner called the meeting to order and introduced Barbara Owen Boerger, who gave an informative, up to date presentation on the development of the new “Good Sam” nursing home. Chapter members were able to see the site plan and blueprints. They reported they believe the single patient rooms with private baths, along with the “neighborhood concept” is such a wonderful, radical change from the 50-year-old philosophy for patient care.

The new home will have both skilled care and assisted living “neighborhoods.” Ground breaking ceremonies are planned for late April with occupancy beginning in the summer of 2013.

The local nursing home must show area support by raising $1 million toward construction costs. The “Good Sam” agency itself is investing $17 million into the project. Owen-Boerger is in charge of local fundraising and has a number of innovative ways for locals to invest in this valuable community asset. She is readily available to give presentations on the plans and fundraising opportunities.

After the presentation the group enjoyed refreshments provided by Violet Johnson.

The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. April 11 at Koochiching County Senior Center. All persons interested in senior issues are welcome to attend. Charlotte Saari will be the hostess serving refreshments.
