The International Falls Lions Club conducted their monthly meeting Nov. 1 at Almost Lindy’s.

Dick Schaak, president, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the table prayer offered by Beverly Mayfield.

Thank you notes were received from Olivia Besch for the Diabetes Walk, MS for the donation in memory of John Roche, the high school for the balloons for Homecoming, and for hospital floral arrangements for Sally Schaak and Evelyn Perron.

Secretary and treasurers reports were read and we were reminded of the memorial service for Lorraine Farquharson, wife of former member Tim Farquharson to be conducted Saturday at the Salvation Army.

Correspondence was a reminder of Mid-winter convention in Thunder Bay, “The Spectacle,” Lions sight program newsletter and a request for financial assistance for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving dinner. The club donated $200.

The first shipment of ice melt has arrived. A 40-pound bucket of an environmentally safe product is available for $17.50. Contact Dick Briese at 286-5508. Delivery is an option.

There will be an agreement with local optometrists as to the limit Lions will pay toward glasses. Vision Optical has offered to donate glasses and exam once a year if recommended by the Lions Club.

A diabetes screening will be offered at the schools.

Briese spoke on behalf of the Minnesota Lions Diabetes Foundation explaining the Can-do Canine project. This is training dogs for physically handicapped people.

Val Martindale, district governor of 5M10, was our guest. She opened and closed her talk with a song. “Beacon of Hope” is the international theme and her personal theme is “Go Mad” — Making A Difference Through Service. She gave her governors pin to president Schaak; secretary Karen Briese and treasurer Serene Millette. Also receiving pins were past president Dick Briese and Beth Reed Martindale was installed as district governor at the summer convention in Sydney, Australia.

The next meeting will be the Christmas party Dec. 6 at Almost Lindy’s.
