Summer vacation is rapidly drawing to a close and that means the library is gearing up for fall programming. We will continue much of what we’ve done in the past, but are always looking for new and interesting things to do and try. So if you’ve got a great idea for a program you’d like to attend, let me know and we’ll see what we can do.

The library will be closed Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, Sept. 4, including craft night from 4 to 8 p.m. Every Tuesday evening during the school year we will put out a craft project for families to work on together.

Great Decisions the community group for citizen education and discussion programs on foreign policy will again meet in the library meeting room the second Tuesday of the month from 4 to 5:30 p.m. High school/college students and community members are welcome and encouraged to come and listen and/or share views. The Sept. 11 meeting will be on the topic of Mexico and transborder crime and governance. The library has a copy of the reading and discussion guide that can be checked out if you are interested in reading about the topic ahead of time.

Storytime will begin Thursday, Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m. Storytime meets each week the library is open for 20 to 30 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs around a unifying topic. September stories will be about family, friends and fall. The stories and activities are geared for children ages 3 to 5 years of age but children of all ages are welcome to come and enjoy this lively introduction to the library and learning.

Teen gaming will continue to be held Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8. Any teen in grades 7 and above is welcome to enjoy electronic and board games at a variety of levels. Refreshments are provided and no registration is necessary. So grab a friend and come hang out. In September we’ll put out the gaming equipment on Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Family gaming is generally held once a month and provides families with an opportunity to come and play games together. We have a wide variety of board games and an eclectic collection of Wii games for play. Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. we’ll put out the games for families to enjoy together.

Monday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Backus Auditorium the library brings back documentary movie night with discussion. Join us for a documentary movie followed by a short discussion of the issues raised with refreshments. In September we’ll show one of the episodes from the series “Women: War and Peace.” At this time, I think we’ll show “Pray the Devil to Hell and Back” about the Liberian women who took on the warlords and regime of dictator Charles Taylor.

Make the library a part of your regular schedule. We want to get to know each of you.
