International Falls Lions Club met Feb. 7 at Lenard’s.
Dick Briese chaired the meeting and Betty Villalta offered the table prayer. Karen Briese gave the minutes and treasurers report.
It was announced we have nearly sold out on ice melt so another pallet will be ordered to take care of the rest of winter. Our ice melt is environmentally safe to plant life and animals. It comes in a 40-pound bucket which has many uses when empty.
Thank you notes were received from Can-do Canines and Diabetes for Parade of Green donations.
Briese and Mary Decker talked about mid-winter convention which was held in Thunder Bay. Attendance was down probably due to alot of clubs to the south not having passports. Next year, the convention will be in Grand Rapids.
Having the lunch wagon at the fishing derby the last Sunday of February was discussed. Ice conditions may put the derby in a parking lot!
Caryn Noland will again head the Fall Health Fair. A preliminary planning meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lenard’s.
Discussion was held on making Lions more visible and to encourage people to join. It’s a community service group centered around sight, hearing and diabetes. If this interests you, please join us. We have a lot of fun, too.
Guest speaker was Doreen Swendsen, school nurse. Her topic was diabetes in children. She thanked the group for our participation in Camp Needlepoint which is a summer camp for diabetic children. There are nine children from elementary to high school in our district who have diabetes. The earlier you are screened for diabetes the sooner you can prevent other health complications.
Swendsen also had a request for glasses for a first grader and an eighth grader. The club voted to spend up to $130 each for new glasses.
The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. March 7 at Lenard’s.
