The International Falls Lions Club conducted their monthly meeting May 4.

President Dick Schaak opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Betty Villalta offered the table prayer.

Guests for the evening were Mike and Caryn Noland, Judy Lutz and JoAnn Bokovoy.

Minutes and treasurers reports were read, noting that outstanding ice melt money was received and Kirby Wilcox gave a brief report on the mints and gum balls.

Correspondence consisted of the Lions Club Hearing Center newsletter, a thank you note from Strive and from the Roche family regarding the Multiple Sclerosis walk. Sixteen family members raised over $1,100. Also, a thank you from the American Diabetes Association.

JoAnn Bokovoy from Community Education spoke on PALS, a group for disabled adults. She showed slides of their recent chili bowl activity. From all the smiles, you could tell they were having fun and appreciated the funds that made it possible. They also have a prom and many other monthly activities.

Judy and Caryn, who have become blind, told some stories on themselves and explained how they lost their sight and how they manage on a daily basis.

Judy demonstrated an electronic memo machine. Instead of writing a note, you speak into the handheld machine. Caryn is interested in getting one, also.

Dick Briese announced that Fort Frances Charter Night is tonight, Friday, May 8, and our Charter Night will be May 29 at the Holiday Inn. We will have a brief meeting at 5:30 to make some Fourth of July plans.

The Lehman sisters from Littlefork are interested in going to Camp Needlepoint, a learning camp for diabetic children. The club offered them $300 to help with the registration fee.

Plans are being made to have a public screening for diabetes. Watch The Daily Journal for date and place.

Rental for space at the bass tournament was taken care of and we’d like to keep our lunch wagon busy this summer. We will do auctions besides the Fourth of July and fishing derbies. This is how we raise money to help others.

The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. May 29 at the Holiday Inn, followed by Charter Night.
