After 30 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service in the Falls, George Konecny retired yesterday.

At the annual Gustavus hockey awards banquet, which was held April 7 at the Holiday House in St. Peter, Tim Blais, Gustavus junior from International Falls, was selected as one of next year’s co-captains.

Winner of the Elks Bowling League was Herman’s Hermits made up of Jim Bartkowski, Jack Blake, Rod Max and Wally Herman.

Dick Zauft, Ranier craftsman, is reviving the almost-lost art of designing and building cedar strip-ribbed canoes. Zauft has recently finished construction of a 17-foot canoe made of cedar and ash wood with an outer covering of fiberglass cloth.

Joseph Tracy Jr., son of Clarence Tracy, Van Lynn Road, was selected to represent American Legion William Robideau Post at the 14th Annual Legion Boys’ State.

A girl was born today at La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, to Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Grabill, Loman Route, 8 pounds, 9 ounces.

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Anderson, Blue Goose Apartments, 5 pounds, 14 1/2 ounces.

Koochiching County will again have the services of a full-time juvenile probation and parole officer beginning April 26. The new official is Joseph Adelmeyer.

60 YEARS AGO

Mrs. James Gordon was guest of honor at a stork shower at the home of Mrs. Otis Gordon, 422 Seventh St.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Oveson, 704 Ninth Ave., weight, 6 pounds, 12 ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. John A. Johnson of South International Falls observed their 49th wedding anniversary at a family gathering in the home of their son, Albert Johnson, 817 Seventh Ave.

Cpl. William Rogers Jr. and Phillip Rogers, airman USN, left today for their bases after spending 10-day furloughs here with their mother, Mrs. Dorothy Rogers.

70 YEARS AGO

Mary Louise Sether, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Sether, 813 Seventh Ave., entertained five little girls at a birthday party at her home today. Five aunts of the little girl also attended the affair.

Mr. and Mrs. Merl Gardner (Eva Lindstrom) of Crystal Beach announce the birth of a daughter today at the Laurion Maternity Home.

Mrs. Mary Malerich was re-appointed clerk of the International Falls water department at the organizational meeting of the city council.

Jack Koch, 616 Seventh St., son of Mrs. George Jeffreys of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and William Savard, son of Thomas Savard Sr., left early this morning via Eveleth for Minneapolis where they will have final examinations for entrance into the U.S. Navy.
