Marine Lance Cpl. Patrick A. Rosendahl, a 1986 graduate of Falls Senior High School, has been awarded a Meritorious Mast while serving at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Heather Kantos, a member of the Borderland Flyers Gymnastics, took a third place in the Red Lake, Ontario, regional meet on April 4. Jessie Reed took second and Wendy Wood fifth.

40 YEARS AGO

William Morris, assistant superintendent of schools, said today that due to the death of Mrs. Gordon Piekarski, a member of the faculty, classes will not be in session Thursday until 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Piekarski, a teacher at Alexander School for the past eight years, died Saturday in Falls Memorial Hospital.

Jim Kalstad was the most improved bowler in the Elks League and Alex Katrin won the Elks Bowling Tournament. Tom Riley and Roger Anderson were the winners of the doubles in their tournament.

Races have developed in the district 361 school board election. Mrs. Cliff (Judy) Blais of Island View Route, and C.S. DeBoer of Ray both filed yesterday.

Paulvin A. Hertwig, of Alexandria, arrived to assume his new duties as manager of the Border, Grand and Parkway Drive In theatres here. He succeeds Clarence Morris, who has been incapacitated by illness.

Fourth grade basketball champs are Lee Manselle, Gary Kochevar, John Gerlach, Russell Rask, Sam McLinn, Danny Anderson and Gerald Carlson.

The marriage of Shirley Ann Miller of Big Falls and Donald Nels Kleppe took place in the Mission Covenant Church in Big Falls Saturday evening.

Douglas Eugene, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Rasmussen, International Falls, was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church, Loman, April 12. Jack Turrie of Duluth, Everett Rasmussen of Manitou and Mrs. Mae Olson of Black River were sponsors.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kroeger, 100 1/2 12th St. weight, 5 pounds, 11 ounces.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baron, 1008 10th St., weight, 7 pounds, 4 ounces.

70 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Daisie Soderlind has just returned from Washington, D.C., after visiting her husband, who is stationed there with the U.S. Naval forces.

H.H. Berg, superintendent of the Border Publishing Company’s plant, Friday observed the 25th anniversary as a Daily Journal employee.

Mrs. R. D. Medberry, South International Falls, resident who made news March 13 by bearing her third “Friday the 13th baby,” today reported that The Journal story and picture of the event has come to the attention of Robert Ripley, author of the popular “Believe It Or Not” cartoon feature appearing in newspapers all around the world.

Pvt. Rollin M. Clark of Loman was graduated recently from the Chanute field branch of the U.S. Army Air Corps technical schools.
