Dennis Kalar, 30, will begin duties as Minnesota Highway patrolman in the Borderland area April 30.

Falls students named to participate in the State Speech Tournament April 28 at Sibley High School, Mendota Heights, are Leslie Johnston, serious poetry; Lynn Degrugillier, non-original oratory; and Alan Chute, extemporaneous speaking.

Sherri Ettestad, 18, of Ranier, and Mary Pearson, 15, of Ray, were chosen to represent Koochiching County in Washington, D.C., in August. The girls were selected from a field of seven 4-Hers from the county. Frances Chezick, 16, of Papermakers Colony, was named as the first alternate and Melissa Caswell, 17, of Ericsburg, was chosen as second alternate.

50 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, to Mr. and Mrs. James Wherley, 9 pounds, 3 ounces.

Mrs. John O'Sell, 612 Fifth Ave., returned to her home after a winter visit in Jonesboro, Ark. Mrs. O'Sell departed for her visit last September.

Mr. and Mrs. George Titus, Island View Route, have returned to northern Minnesota after spending the winter months in Apache Junction, and Mesa, Ariz. They have been away six months.

Fire Chief Vernon McMicken and three firemen, Reuben Julien, Elmer Chovan and Tom Coulombe, will leave Sunday for St. Paul where they will attend a five-day state fire school.

60 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bernard, 1409 First Ave. E., weight, 6 pounds, 10 ounces.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Scheirer, 1309 First Ave. W., weight, 7 pounds, 10 ounces. Name chosen, Kory Lynn.

Arthur (Art) C. Larson, Mando maintenance supervisor, was honored at a coffee party by fellow employees in recognition of 40 years of service to Minnesota and Ontario Paper Company.

A miscellaneous benefit shower for the Harvey Johnson family, South International Falls, will be conducted at 8 o'clock this evening in the village fire hall. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and small children - a boy and two girls - lost all their possessions in a fire which gutted their home last week.

70 YEARS AGO

A daughter was born today to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd L. Pettis of Indus at the Laurion Maternity Home. Donna Mae will be the child's name.

Virginia Bennett McIntyre and Rose Hellekson are new employees in the Mando time department.

James Edward James, son of Mrs. Nellie James, is a new recruit who began training in one of the camps at Farragut, Idaho Naval Training Station recently.

Texas isn't too bad at this time of the year but it still doesn't stack up with Minnesota, according to Pvt. Edward Kalar of Camp Wolters. He reports that James Valentine of the Falls is in the same camp and same barracks.
